Deadliest Catch – Multiple Maydays

by Mikey

The opi season is coming to a close, but mama nature still has one more storm left in her.  The boats struggle to get their quotas done and get into Dutch Harbor before the storm hits.  The prediction is 40ft seas, 70 knot winds, freezing spray and its all just 72 hours away……

Multiple Maydays

We join the Time Bandit on the crab and coasting to an early end to their opi season. Captain Andy and Captain Jonathan are still wondering who to let go as they have one more deckhand then they need. The fingers are pointing at lazy Russell “the sauna guy” and Mike, the newest arrival, but frequent deckhand.  My money was on Russell, who spends more time in the sauna then he does on deck.  That was until Captain Andy tells the deckhands to close the aft tank and check the mid tank.  The order goes out to the deck but nobody responds.  Kinda like when you were younger and your mom told you to take out the trash or get your little brother out of the dryer.  Of course you heard the order in the back of your head, but you’ve never seen the entire hot for teacher video and that’s pretty important too.

Captain Andy yells to the crew a few times and then finally Captain Jonathan goes down and really yells at them.  When the captain gives you an order you take care of business, or money is lost and people get hurt.  Deckhand Mike makes the mistake of arguing that he didn’t hear or couldn’t understand and just takes it a little too far, as Captain Jonathan threatens to fire him if he doesn’t close his yapper.  So now it’s a toss up who’s going to leave. Willy’s Smokehouse – A New Favorite Emerges

by Brian

Hey, everybody!  Sorry for the lack of recent updates.  Mikey and I have been slackin’ on our pimpin’ over the past few days, livin’ it up and enjoying the good life.  But don’t you worry; we’ve also been eating some good stuff and will be writing all about it this week.

Coming up, we’ve got some fine Italian food, a new episode of The Catch, a pizza that might be our highest scoring ever and some authentic Mexican cuisine.  But for tonight’s post, I’ve got the latest and greatest BBQ in our area.

Willy’s Smokehouse – Just off the 101 at Chesebro, in Agoura Hills.

For those of you who don’t know, we’ve been doing quite a bit of BBQ lately.  We’ve had good experiences and bad, but I think Willy’s has emerged as my latest favorite.

Willy’s is a small place, right beside the freeway, and if you’re not looking for it you’ll drive right past.  That would be a huge mistake though, because the barbeque is as down-home and delicious as you’ll find anywhere in L.A.

I originally heard about this place through a friend who works there.  Usually I take these kinds of recommendations with a grain of salt because, as an employee, he or she has a vested interest in the restaurant doing well.  So I looked it up on a few of the rating sites and verified the legitimacy of Willy’s.  It checked out, so I decided to check it out.

Patio

My friend and I rolled up at around 7:30pm on a Tuesday night.  It wasn’t too crowded, which made me think that either a lot of people still don’t know about it, or they just can’t find it, call off the search and settle for the Wood Ranch down the street.  Fine by me.  It was a nice night, so we snagged a booth outside on the patio and started looking over the menu.  Continue reading

Uniquely Thai

by Mikey

I had a movie to get to, so I had to find something nearby and something quick.  I had about 30 minutes to work with, so I decided to hit this little Thai joint that is right next to the theater.  On the outside of the building it says Thai To Go, but the lady running the place told me its actually called Uniquely Thai, so we will go with that.  It’s a really little place that seats 10 at the most, but they are attached to a food court so there is plenty of seating around it.  I was hoping for a quick hearty meal.  What I got was…….

Uniquely Thai – Off of Johnson next to Century 16 Theaters

My first impression of this place is that it’s under new ownership.  Most of what they have on the menu is pictured on the wall and they offer as much help as a hobo with schizophrenia when trying to find out what’s good.  I asked 3 different times what would be good and all I got was a vacant stare.  It was kinda like asking a Zebra how it got its stripes.  Basically the Zebra will look at you and acknowledge your existence, but he ain’t givin up anything.

El Taco De Mexico

by Mikey

I took a little journey south of the border, well, south of Main St anyways.  I had heard many good things about El Taco de Mexico.  However, what they did not tell me was that there were like 5 of these places, all over Ventura County. Without knowing which one was the good one, I was hopeful that I might get lucky.

The first thing I noticed about this joint was that it was like a sauna inside. The heat was horrible. I was only inside for 10 minutes so far and was sweating like I stole something. If they are not going to kick up the AC then they need to invest in some el fanos.

Wiping the sweat from my eyes I noticed that the menu was 20% Spanish and 80% pictures. Lucky for me I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, finally I’d get to use it for something. Continue reading

Deadliest Catch – Bitter Tears

by Mikey

It’s nearing the end of opi season on the Bering Sea and most of the fleet are down to their last few strings before quotas are met and checks can be cashed.  The ice flow is on the move and ready to start eating some gear as the ships race from string to string in hopes of finding their gear where they last left it.  F all those logging shows and watching truckers drive on ice, this is where it’s at.

On a side note, this logging thing is getting a bit crazy.  We have regular loggers, swamp loggers, and now ice loggers.  All of these shows try to capture the greatness that is “the catch” and fall way short.  I tried sitting through a couple of these things and I really feel like I’d rather watch two homeless guys fight over a diaper filled with cheetos.  Not to mention, I still don’t understand the whole ice road trucker thing.  We watch a dude drive his truck over the ice and wait to see what happens?  It’s a lot like watching your little brother sitting with a fork next to a light socket.  You are getting bored watching and you kinda want him to just put it in the socket already.  Anyways, on to the catch! Why Brian Doesn’t Like Chinese Food

by Brian

So, basically, I don’t hate Chinese food.  Chinese food hates me.  Or rather, anyone who owns a Chinese food restaurant hates me.  Maybe it’s because I haven’t been to a really good Chinese restaurant, but I keep trying places and getting disappointed.  So this post is dedicated to the top three reasons why Chinese food is about to get bounced off my list of food options.

For the purpose of this post, I’m not referring to chain restaurants like Panda Express.  I actually think the food there is decent.  The only problem with Panda is that I feel like I’m always drawing the short straw when I go there.  I mean, some people always stand in the slowest lane at the grocery store, some people never get the front parking space, but me?  I get the guy at Panda who has to prove how good he is at keeping costs under control.

You know this guy.  He’s the one who gives you the half scoop of beef with broccoli and can eek out 975 servings in a single tray of orange chicken.  I don’t go to Panda anymore.  Not ’cause I don’t enjoy the food, but instead because I don’t want a plate full of rice, garnished with two pieces of orange chicken and a sprig of broccoli.  Actually, since I won’t go there anymore, I’m asking one of you, any of you, to punch that guy in the face next time he gives you that vacant stare when you ask for just a little more kung pao chicken.  Right in the face.   And tell him Brian sent ya. Hungover? Let a UCSB Grad Help

by Brian

Hey everybody,

With all the eating (and drinking) that I’ve been doing lately, I thought I would dip into my well of knowledge and share a couple things about man’s greatest affliction.  I’m not talking Cancer, Heart Disease or anything like that.  I’m talking hangovers, people.  The hangover is a menace that has plagued society from the time of the ancient Egyptians and the sad thing is that we are no closer to curing it today, than we were so many thousands of years ago.

I know some of you will say that the only cure for a hangover is to not drink.  To those people I say, “Shut it!”  Why should we avoid the greatness that is booze.  I mean, even Benjamin Franklin considered beer to be a gift from God and if it’s good enough for Ben, it’s good enough for me.
