China Palace

by Mikey

It’s time for some Chinese food and China Palace advertises authentic Mandarin & Szechwan cuisine.  This is all well and good, but the real question is: how does it eat?
I was taking this particular order to go ’cause I wanted to do a little Trader Joe shopping and then get home so I could submerge myself in my self-loathing.

China Palace – Ventura Victoria Blvd next to Trader Joes

I went into the Palace to get a couple of orders of this and an order of that. What I ended up doing was following the direction of a really nice lady who was very helpful.  I’ve never bought Chinese food from someone this helpful.  She explained every dish and set me up with a great combination to try the most possible without spending a lot. Even if the food sucked, at this point, I still take my hat off to the Palace. Continue reading

Toi on Sunset – Rockin’ Thai

by Brian

It had been a while since I’d had some good Asian food, and since my Asian food guru, Adam, has been busy lately, I decided to hit a really cool Thai spot on sunset that a couple of my coworkers had suggested.  Actually, they came with me and it was awesome.  Also, it’s been quite a while since I wrote about a restaurant on the night I went, so maybe this post will be better than most because everything is still pretty fresh in my mind.  Maybe I’ll even eat the leftovers while I write…

Toi on Sunset – On Sunset Blvd., west of Vine in Hollywood.

TOI

There was so much to like about this place that I hardly know where to begin.  The last Thai place I reviewed was the perfect spot if you’re coming over the hill from Hollywood.  This place is the place you go when you’re too drunk to drive over that hill. Continue reading

Edo Sushi & Grill

by Mikey

I’ve been on a pretty good run of luck sushi places.  I was hoping it would not end at Edo.  I wanted them to be good mostly because they are not far from my place.  It’s always good to have great food around you and, for the most part, what’s around me is average at best.  I opened the door to go in and realized I might have made a mistake.  It was just me, the sushi chef, the waitress, and the thought that I should have gone for Italian.  Nobody else was in the place.

I went ahead and took this order to go.  I don’t really like being the only one in a place ’cause then I feel guilty and order more then I’ll eat.  Plus, they were staring at me.  They either were glad to see me ’cause fat guys order a lot of sushi, or because they wanted to add me to the menu as a Mikey Roll. Mama Rita’s Revenge

by Brian

So tonight, I was totally planning on doing a review on this Mexican restaurant that I went to last week.  But to be honest, it wasn’t that great and I was lacking the inspiration necessary to feign interest in the place.  Therefore, on a whim, I chose to make my triumphant return to Mama Rita’s in Newbury Park.

For those of you who haven’t read the Kitchen Nightmares debacle, check it out now before you jump into my post tonight.

So I wanted to originally go back to Mama Rita’s with the crew that we took to the Kitchen Nightmares shoot.  But conflicting schedules, plus the fact that Michelle had a baby in the interim (congrats, btw!), made it a luxury that I just couldn’t afford.  I walked into the place at around 7:45pm and was greeted warmly by the owner’s mother.  She offered me a table, but since I was all alone, I opted to saddle up to the bar. Sushi Ozekii

by Mikey

I’ve been doing well on finding some decent sushi lately.  I was out running some errands and actually just happened upon Ozekii’s.  They call themselves a California style sushi restaurant, which usually means more avocado, asparagus, cucumber, and produce in general.  They have a lot of different dishes and most of them are very colorful and have plenty of fish and produce.  Not to mention, they are probably the nicest group of sushi makers I’ve been to in quite a while. Sumo Japanese Restaurant

by Mikey

I finally hit up this Japanese place that I’d heard some good things about.   Sumo is tucked away in the corner of the Ralph’s shopping center off of Victoria.  I brought along my resident sushi expert for kids, my boy T.  It was a good thing I brought him too, because he had to help me find the door.  There is no signage and no arrows or lights to guide you.  You just pick the closest blank door to the corner and there it is.  Both T and I had I hopes that this Sumo would be tons better than the Sumo in Camarillo.

Sumo is more than just a sushi place.  They have a pretty large menu and a lot of specials.  I would say sushi is just a small piece to their business, but it is what T and I were interested in.  I’ve never found much interest in the chicken and steak dishes unless they are cooking in front of you.  I very rarely will order anything but sushi from a Japanese joint.

Sumo is a very nice restaurant.  It provides sushi bar seats, full tables, and booths. It’s very clean and modern and the service is pretty good.  One of the things I notice a lot of sushi places doing is bringing you a cup of ice and then a can of coke when you order a soda.  I kinda, at least, like having the illusion I’m not at a block party.  This place has the full on fountain drinks and gives you a hefty “man glass,” which beats the can and cup any day of the week. Best Appetizer of 2009 and maybe of all time…

by Brian

I will be very happy when Time Warner decides to give Mikey his cable and internet back.  I’ve been relegated to stealing internet from neighbors just to get posts up and I must say that it sucks the big one.  So anyway, I apologize for missing last night’s post and hope that this one will make it up to you.

Also, I don’t have pics of this place because I only had my cameraphone and this restaurant was darker than Wesley Snipes, so sorry.

Sunset Terrace Restaurant and Lounge– In the Janss Mall on Moorpark Rd., Thousand Oaks

So I went out last night to see Angels & Demons with a friend.  Before we saw the film, which I was disappointed in quite frankly, we decided to stop in at Sunset Terrace to have a couple drinks and some dinner.

Sunset is a little dark even in the day.  The furnishings are nice, but the lack of light makes the bar seem out of place considering it’s in a mall in Thousand Oaks.  Still, they are always busy and right next to the theater so it’s a great place to get drinks before a show.  I personally need at least 3 beers before seeing anything with Tom Hanks.
