Brian fell off the wagon and landed on Chili Cheese Fries

by Brian

I have to start this post by saying thanks to Mikey.  Your goddamned mini sirloin burger post has me craving all kinds of junk food.  I didn’t even think they looked appetizing, it was that freaking jingle that set me off.  But rather then go full-on into the fast food, I decided to seek out a fast food alternative and one of Thousand Oaks’ hidden gems.

P & L Burgers – On Avenida De Los Arboles between Erbes and the 101, Thousand Oaks

P&LBurgers

I wasn’t in the mood for a burger since Mikey and I grilled up some great ones on Monday.  I guess that was the start of the problem.  But rather than ignore it, in the vain hope that it will go away, I decided to embrace the craving. Continue reading

Sex, Lies, and Mini Sirloin Burgers

by Mikey

We are starting a new feature here at EatMeCalifornia.  We want to find out if all these fast food superpowers think we are all just food gobbling idiots who don’t pay attention to what their product is supposed to look like.  I’m tired of seeing commercials and pictures of food that does not exist here on Earth.  The videos and photos that they are showing us, which entice us to give their next big meal a try, are misleading.  Now, of course we already know that the man wants us to buy his 6 dollar burgers and will show us sexy burgers all covered with tomato, onion, and cheese.  What the man doesn’t know is that I’m showin’ photos of the real burgers right here.  I’m going to prove that their beauty queen, sexy burgers are really malnourished, meth addicted, second cousins twice removed.

The first meal in my scope is the mini sirloin burger from Jack in the Box.  Jack in the Box is definitely on the front lines of marketing, with pretty great commercials featuring mini cows and cowboys and even including a damn catchy jingle.  But is it all based on a lie? Continue reading

Pulled Pork = Tri Tip?

by Mikey

A new bbq joint opened up not too far from me, so you know I had to check it out.  Plus, the place has my name stamped on it, so I had to find out if it was worthy to be a part of the Mike empire.  I’m on the fence with this one folks.  This place kinda left me confused, bewildered, and just a touch bamboozled.

Nettie’s Crab Shack, The Phoenix, Elbo Room and No More Drinking

by Brian

This past weekend the boys of EatMeCalifornia took a little road trip.  Well, half a road trip.  See that jeep in the background of our header?  That jeep used to be Mikey’s.  Now it’s in pieces, making it’s way across the US/Mexico border.  But things tend to work out for Mikey and I, and it is for that reason that Uncle Dave came to the rescue and provided Mikey with his new ride… for free.

(Car may be slightly different than Mikey's ride)

So we flew up to San Fran, full of promise and looking for adventure.  Luckily Uncle Dave also has an awesome ladyfriend and it was at her suggestion that we visited Nettie’s Crab Shack, a fairly new addition to the San Francisco food scene. Continue reading

Danny’s Deli and Grill

by Mikey

Ventura is in need of some seriously good deli’s. Thousand Oaks is loaded with them but Ventura thus far has been lackluster. T and I were hoping this family owned Deli would be the beginning of some good stuff. The question remained would the huge jar of scary pickles be to much for us to handle? Continue reading

Yeah so I went to a chain restaurant. Wanna fight about it?

by Mikey

My son, being the brainiac he is, won an award at his school for all-around academics, finally justifying the, “My son will buy and sell your honor student”, bumper sticker I have on my car.  They gave him a nifty certificate and a free dinner at Red Robin in the Pacific View Mall.  Naturally I took this chance to review Red Robin; a place I wouldn’t normally go into, not because I’m fighting the man and his industry but because to me it’s always been an overrated burger joint.  I gotta say I was very pleasantly surprised.

Food for thought… just in time for earth day.

by Brian

I don’t know where all of you guys are, but it has been absolutely perfect here in sunny socal lately.  I’m so stoked that the warm weather is here and am looking forward to lots of patio dining in the near future.  Yesterday I took a little trip to the south bay and ended up at an awesome new restaurant in El Segundo called Paul Martin’s American Bistro.  The credit for this find has to go to my buddy Jack who is currently living off noodles and such in China.  Thanks for looking out bro!  I hope you can readjust to American food when ya get back.

You guys are probably wondering what this place has to do with earth day.  It’s a fair question.  The answer is that Paul Martin’s prides itself on serving organic, sustainable and local foods.  If you think that means the food won’t taste good, you’re out of your mind.  This is the latest venture by the creator of the P.F. Changs and Flemings steakhouse brands.  Most of the food served in the restaurant comes from our fine state and anything that isn’t is brought in whole before being prepared.  That means that every sauce, every soup and every component of each dish is prepped on site.  I was there on a fairly slow Sunday and there was an army of about 10 prep cooks doing the work of 5 restaurants in back.  Now that you’ve got a little background, let’s get on with the review…
