About Mikey

The 70's brought us many wonderful things. Star Wars, shag carpet, the Bee Gee's, the Brady Bunch, and most important his royal largeness Mikey. Delivered to us in the middle of the night on a bed of twinkies from the gods of cakes and pies. Mikey has been a Ventura County resident for close to 16 years now. He took an oath to bring down the establishment, fight the power, and deliver man-kind from evil. He of course put that all on hold for awhile in order to bring you the best in food reviews from all around California and especially from Ventura County. So food establishments beware, he is coming to your restaurant with his face of fury, you better serve it hot and there better be some gravy on it!

Deadliest Catch – No Second Chances

by Mikey

We left off last week with a 40 ft wave crashing into the Wizard while they were trying to put the tarp over the front pots.  The wave consumed the front of the ship and the deck hands all disappeared into white water.  We were left wondering if anyone was hurt, or even worse, swept off the ship.

Cue Bon Jovi and do your best Captain Sig “I’m on the crab” celebration…….. Continue reading

Busy Bee Café with Gravy and even more Gravy

by Mikey

I thought it might be fun to hit up the Busy Bee Café in Ventura, down in the older part of town, off of Main St.  They have been a staple of the community and a tourist hot spot for a very long time.  Busy Bee is modeled after a 1950’s diner and tries and keep their food similar to that era.  They are all about hamburgers, shakes, pie, and blue plate specials.

Busy Bee Café – Ventura Main St in Old Town Ventura

This part of Ventura is actually loaded with places to eat, so B and I will be picking them off, one by one.  I chose this one because I had been there a few times many years ago and I remember enjoying the burgers, shakes, and the waitresses in little cheerleader outfits awesome jukebox. Sex, Lies, and BK Burger Shots!

by Mikey

So, since we did a comparison of Jack in the Box’s mini sirloin burgers, I thought it was only fair to get the King up on our block and take a look at the BK Burger shot.

We have two slightly different marketing schemes with these burgers.  Burger King actually labeled their burgers a shot, so basically you can’t really expect much from it.  Jack in the Box went more with the meat quality and threw in the word mini.  However Burger King does still claim to flame broil everything so you should still expect a fairly tasty burger. Deadliest Catch – Payback time!

by Mikey

The 2009 opilio crab season is beginning.   It’s winter in the Bering Sea and this is when Deadliest Catch is at its deadliest.  For those of you who are on your first season of the Catch, this is the time of year in the Bering Sea where the ocean is at its roughest, the winds are at their strongest, and the weather is at its coldest.  As the water and rain hit the boat it freezes to the entire outside of the ship.  Even the ocean spray freezes immediately to the pots and the deck.  You will see the crews constantly hammering ice off the ships because as we all know when water freezes, much like me after a Vegas buffet, it gets damn heavy.

On Your Way to San Diego

by Mikey

B and I went on a little journey to San Diego to expand the EatmeCalifornia empire and bring you guys a little sampling from our sister city to the south.

We actually intended to eat much earlier in the day and maybe give you a sampling from a bit closer to LA but we were cruising through traffic really well and the radio kept playing blocks of Brian’s favorite artists like KC and the Sunshine Band, Zamfir’s wood flute, and a solid block of the blond Frankenstein John Tesh.  Had they played Celine Dion I’m afraid we wouldn’t have stopped at all.

However, no such luck, no Celine, so we ended up stopping in Oceanside and hit an interesting spot called Davina’s Cabo Grill. Continue reading

Deadliest Catch – Down to the Wire

by Mikey

We are in the final week of the king crab season and the boats are all scrambling to make their quotas before the market prices drop too low.  The Time Bandit finished up last week, meeting their quota.  The rest of the fleet has one last week to get on the crab.

Memorial Day

by Mikey

Hey everyone, we are taking the day off today, to cook up some burgers, drink some beer and toast to the men and women who make it all possible.

Here’s to you, our brave, bad, and bold, honorable fallen men and women of the United States Military.  We at EatMeCalifornia raise our glasses to the freedoms and ideals you have kept safe for us!

Make sure you guys are eating, drinking and being merry.  Just don’t party so much you wake up naked next to a cross eyed llama, with a wedding ring on your finger, covered in scrabble pieces, wondering what the hell happened because you don’t even play scrabble.
