Snapper Jacks Taco Shack

by Mikey

With a great name like that, I don’t need to even try to spice it up. Snapper Jack’s was created by a local Ventura man and his wife and yep, his name is even Jack. It opened back in 2000 and I’ve been there a few times. They even have a new location in Camarillo. The one thing I had never had though, was any of their snapper. So here we go with Snapper Jacks Taco Shack.

Aloha Steak House

by Mikey

I took on a high end steak house in Ventura called the Aloha Steak House.  Personally, I don’t normally hit up places where the average meal costs $30 to $40 dollars a plate, but this place gets business and a lot of people like it so I wanted to add it to EatMeCalifornia’s list.

Aloha Steak House – Off of California near the Fairgrounds.

Kyoto not just a place in Japan

by Mikey

First off I apologize to everyone for not getting this up yesterday.  The Angels and some computer issues were to blame.  If it helps, I will have Brian write you an essay on why “Hella” is his favorite word.  On to the review….

I always wonder where Sushi places get their name.  It’s easy when it’s “I Love Sushi”, “Sushi Planet”, or when they use the name of the chef or owner. Me, I would call mine Mikey’s House O’ Fishies.

Kyoto is a place in Japan and one of its largest cities.  It is also a huge cultural and spiritual center in Japan.  Who said you never learn anything on this site? Naturally, you figure any place named after such a wonderful city should have a great spice rack and a good mix of traditional and modern flavors.  Hop on my magic school bus and we’ll check it out.

Can you see me I'm the one waving with the hat on?

Cabo Beach Grill and Sammy Hagar

by Mikey

I’ve eaten in Cabo San Lucas before I’m not sure I’d use them as a reference for a restaurant.  Most of the food there is ok, but not great.  I ate at some local joints, as well as some touristy spots like Sammy Hagar’s joint.  I was curious if this place actually had that touristy, beach-type food or if it was just a name.  I always like seeing the word fresh.  I enjoy testing it out.

By the way, as far as eating in Mexico, stay away from the touristy stuff.  They over-charge you and give you the El Torito type stuff.  Venture out and find the good spots.  I hit up this little taco stand in Puerto Vallarta that had shrimp tacos for a buck a piece, plus Coronas for the same.  They not only gave you platters of shrimp tacos, but they set you up a table with an umbrella right on the beach.  If you ever go on one of those vacation cruises and you get to the port of Puerto, find the nearest cab and have them take you down to the left a few miles, to the beach at the base of the hotel.  It sounds odd now, but it will become clear when your there.  You’ll be away from most of the people and snacking on great shrimp tacos and coronas.  Plus, you can enjoy it more when the old people try and sell you silver, bottles with your name on rice and hemp chairs.  Anyway, on to the review… Continue reading

Meat Locker for the masses.

by Brian

Today I had the opportunity to finally visit one of Thousand Oaks most revered BBQ restaurants:  The Thousand Oaks Meat Locker.  Unbeknown to me, this little shack is within walking distance of my Mom’s place.  I had no idea.  It took me two attempts to find this place today, and I had a google map.  It’s a little restaurant and you can only read the sign from right in front, which makes it hard for people who drive (i.e. Everyone in L.A.) to find it. Your Introduction to PMS

Here at EatMeCalifornia we’ve decided that one man is not enough to truly judge a pizza.  Therefore, Mikey and I will be tag-teaming pizza joints all over the state to give you the best, and worst, pizza that California can dish up.  We’ll take on all challengers, thick crust or thin, deep dish or New York.  Bring on your cheesy, greasy, saucy, worst.  We’ll eat it, rate it, purge it, clean it up and do it all over again.

First up is a little family-owned spot next to Ventura College, called Santino’s.  Before we get into our review, we have to talk a little bit about Continue reading
