Hell’s Kitchen Finale!

by Mikey

Beware.  There be spoilers ahead!

We have finally reached the end for Season 5 of Hell’s Kitchen and I gotta say, it’s about time.  This has been a rough season to watch, mostly because of the lack of talent and the abundance of the mentally challenged.  Let’s kick it off with a recap of last week.

I’ve learned my lesson with Hells Kitchen and didn’t bother posting a Hell’s Kitchen article last week.  Knowing ahead of time that they always do the most to stretch it out, I thought it would be a wasted article and as usual (except for the time I jumped that rod iron fence in baggy shorts) I was right.

In the first part of the season finale Danny and Paula begin to design their restaurants.  Paula is going for more of a bistro, while Danny seems to be leaning towards Danny’s fish and beer. Continue reading

This One’s For The Moms Out There…

by Brian

Because I’m a horrible son, I’m going to be out of town this Sunday.  Lucky for me, my Mom still manages, somehow, to love me.  In fact, she let me take her out for a pre-mother’s day dinner in order to make up for being such a jerk.  I decided that I’d better make it a good one, so I decided to go to Westlake’s answer to Mastro’s in Thousand Oaks:  The Grill on the Alley.

Spencer Makenzie’s Great Fish Taco

by Mikey

I have had a lot of fish tacos in my time.  The taco I had at Spencer Makenzie’s made all those other tacos seem like nasty ass tuna tacos from a frozen multipack at your local grocery store.  This taco made me feel like I was in Hawaii drinking one of those umbrella drinks, lying in a hammock, while the Hawaiian Tropic girls fanned me with 100 dollar bills. It was that good.

This place is not much to look at from the outside.  It definitely does not look like it houses great food.  Inside it’s more like a little diner or an indoor taco stand.  They have a great bunch of people working there.  People who actually know the products and can give you some great inside info on their food. Deadliest Catch and the King Crab

by Brian

So last night’s episode was a bit of a filler, but Mikey gave me such a hard time for breezing through the review last week that I feel like I owe you something half-way decent.  Here goes…

We left off last week with Capt. Keith of the Wizard having his 18 million ton boat come crashing down on his head whilst trying to fix the damn thing.  Honestly, isn’t this something you pay someone else to do?  It’s called delegating.  Learn it, use it, love it.  Continue reading

Deadliest Catch and the Deep Blue Sea

by Brian

Tonight, Mikey and I are premiering a new weekly column for the site.  With Hell’s Kitchen winding down (thank god) we are proactively filling the void with a show that’s actually worth watching: Deadliest Catch.  This weekly column will probably go up on Wednesdays, but because I was retarded and forgot to tivo the 1st episode, I had to wait until tonight to watch the rerun.  Each week, it is my hope that we can not only give a little commentary on the show, but also a review on the culinary bounty that is the ocean.  First the show, then the review… enjoy!

Aloha Steak House

by Mikey

I took on a high end steak house in Ventura called the Aloha Steak House.  Personally, I don’t normally hit up places where the average meal costs $30 to $40 dollars a plate, but this place gets business and a lot of people like it so I wanted to add it to EatMeCalifornia’s list.

Duke’s Canoe Club and our 50th post.

by Brian

So today is the big 5-0.  Mikey and I are all growns up.  In fact, it was Mikey who brought this milestone to my attention.  I would have held off on celebrating until 100, but I just didn’t have the heart to shoot him down.  He suggested we do something special and I suggested we pay a visit to one of the best seafood restaurants in Malibu.

Since we are both a little light on lunch money these days, we decided to hit up the barefoot bar section of Duke’s for a late lunch/early dinner.  By the way, on Fridays they serve $4 Mai Tais all night long.  Too bad Mikey and I don’t drink like girls, it would have been a hell of a lot cheaper… Continue reading
