PJ’s Pub – Home of the Mega Burger

by Brian

I don’t know why, but Mikey seems to have unfairly usurped my title of “man of the people.”  Maybe it’s because I use words like usurp when I write.  Who knows?  In an effort to get my title back, I’ve decided to bring you a post on the only “dive bar” in Thousand Oaks:  PJ’s Pub.

PJ's

PJ’s Pub – At Moorpark Rd and Avenida de los Arboles in the Trader Joe’s shopping center, Thousand Oaks.

Say what you want about PJ’s.  No, really, say what you want about the place, they don’t give a damn.  This is a bar that makes no apologies for what they are: a place to play some pool, get drunk and eat greasy bar food.  In my opinion that’s what makes them unique to Thousand Oaks.  PJ’s is a little bit of Bakersfield, thrown down in the middle of the Conejo Valley. We Love BJ’s

by Brian

Mikey and I spent last night at a cigar tasting event.  The cigars were pretty good, I think.  But then again, I don’t really know anything about cigars, so they could have been horrible and I wouldn’t have known it.  The place that had the tasting was the little cigar shop on Agoura road, next to Bad Ass Coffee, in Westlake Village.  The owner does these tastings every couple of months and there was a pretty decent turn out.  We just sat around, smoked a free cigar, watched the Lakers beat the tar out of Orlando, and had a wee dram of good Kentucky bourbon.  All in all, it was a very nice evening.

After the event, Mikey and I were starving.  Because it was pretty late, our options were sort of limited.  We ended up at BJ’s on T.O. Boulevard and although I usually don’t review chain restaurants, I just couldn’t resist doing a post on BJ’s.

BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse – Near the intersection of Westlake Blvd and T.O. Blvd, Thousand Oaks

I really like this place.  It’s too bad that I hardly ever get to go back to restaurants because we’ve got so many awesome places to review thanks to you guys.

BJ’s is very similar in feel to Rock Bottom in San Diego.  It’s a fun place to watch the game, hang out with friends, or grab after work drinks.  I’m betting that most of you guys have been there already so I won’t waste too much time talking about the restaurant.  Instead, I’ll just give you a few of my favorites. 100 Posts In & We’ve Hit Rock Bottom

by Brian

For those of you who have been keeping up with Mikey and I, you probably already know that Mikey and I had a recent adventure in San Diego (Which according to Ron Burgundy means “a whale’s vagina”).  We had an awesome time while we were there and figured that between fine cigars and pints of cold brew, we’d hit a restaurant or two.  Fortunately, we never had to stop drinking because we found a place in the Gaslamp that brews their own.

Get it? We've hit rock bottom. I'm such a dork!

‘Nardfest ’09 aka. California Strawberry Festival

by Brian

Did you know that there are like 80 billion festivals in California every year?  Enough festivals to have one per person, per day, for about a century.  But what makes the California Strawberry Festival so special that EatMeCalifornia would do a whole post on it?  Not much, really.  Mikey and I just needed to get out.  Plus, I was upset that Mikey didn’t take me antiquing on the way home from SF last weekend.

California Strawberry Festival – In an undisclosed location near the University of Oxnard (Oxnard College)

(not as gay as it seems, yet still relatively gay)

As always, when considering an event Mikey and I ask one small but crucial question.  Will there be booze?  The answer in this case is a resounding YES.  They had strawberry beer, (which was quite nice) strawberry margaritas, strawberry wine, strawberry champagne and a whole lot of other stuff.  I would tell you about all of it, but I don’t wanna sound like that retard from Forrest Gump.  That guy was retarded, right?

Anyway… Booze?  Check.  Food?  Oh hells yeah!  Here are a couple of the delicacies that we sampled on this fine Oxnardian day: Continue reading

Alaskan Style Pizza?

by Mikey

As you all know, B and I just finished up a trip to San Francisco to get my hoopty.  On our way back down south I wanted to get B to this pizza place called the Klondike Café.  It’s a cool little joint in the town of Arroyo Grande.  They have some great pizza and a really great atmosphere.

Klondike Café – Arroyo Grande: Take Grand Ave Exit off the 101 North

I’ve known about Klondike for a while.  I used to live in Arroyo Grande for a few years and have a couple of good places we will be adding to the EatMeCalifornia map.  Klondike Café is a stop you should definitely add.  They are in the basement of a building on Grand Ave, in the little old town of AG.  It’s Alaskan style pizza in a very cool tavern-like atmosphere. Nettie’s Crab Shack, The Phoenix, Elbo Room and No More Drinking

by Brian

This past weekend the boys of EatMeCalifornia took a little road trip.  Well, half a road trip.  See that jeep in the background of our header?  That jeep used to be Mikey’s.  Now it’s in pieces, making it’s way across the US/Mexico border.  But things tend to work out for Mikey and I, and it is for that reason that Uncle Dave came to the rescue and provided Mikey with his new ride… for free.

(Car may be slightly different than Mikey's ride)

So we flew up to San Fran, full of promise and looking for adventure.  Luckily Uncle Dave also has an awesome ladyfriend and it was at her suggestion that we visited Nettie’s Crab Shack, a fairly new addition to the San Francisco food scene. Continue reading

Jackin’ the Rabbit and Gettin’ Stuft

by Brian

Saturday was a great day for EatMeCalifornia.  Not only did we get in yet another sweet pizza review, but we also made our first appearance on WordsCause, a blogtalk radio show hosted by one of our readers.  If you haven’t heard the show yet, here is the link to listen.  We pretty much take up the 8-30 minute section of the show, which proves once and for all that Mikey and I are really full of hot air.

Dean actually took the time to come hang out with us and help us eat our pie.  I’ve known him for a while now, but had no idea how talented he really was until he showed me the iphone game that he developed.  It’s called Jack The Rabbit and besides being fun, it’ll also give you gynormous forearms and put hair on your chest.  Oh, you’d like some video?  Here ya go:
