Fancy Pizza and Celebrity Chefs

by Brian

So I’m a big food TV fan, but I haven’t been watching much lately since Mikey has a good grip on Hell’s Kitchen and Top Chef is in hibernation for now.  I did manage to catch the new show called Chopped on NBC.  Guess what?  They cancelled that shizz yesterday. Oh well, there weren’t any interesting peeps on there anyway.

Back to my celebrity chef fetish… I don’t normally act on it by going to their restaurants (except TC Betty’s Grub in LA & Brian’s Oceanaire in SD).  I also tend to stay away from the store products that celebs schill for.  If you must know, I only buy Paul Newman tomato sauces.  Have you ever seen Cool Hand Luke?  What a badass that guy was.

So for the first time in forever, I bowed down to the cult of chef celebrity by having lunch at Wolfgang Puck’s L.A. Bistro in Westlake.  And it goes a little something like this… Continue reading

Return of the Natural Cafe

by Brian

Hey everybody, it was a long weekend for me so I’m gonna keep this post short and sweet.  Today, I decided to hit up the Natural Cafe in Thousand Oaks.  It’s got a totally different vibe from the Simi location, which is nice.  Plus, where else can you see a skinny, hippy lookin’ white kid go from eating vegan food to rollin’ a Range Rover on dubs in 2.5 seconds.  Gotta love T.O. Meat Locker for the masses.

by Brian

Today I had the opportunity to finally visit one of Thousand Oaks most revered BBQ restaurants:  The Thousand Oaks Meat Locker.  Unbeknown to me, this little shack is within walking distance of my Mom’s place.  I had no idea.  It took me two attempts to find this place today, and I had a google map.  It’s a little restaurant and you can only read the sign from right in front, which makes it hard for people who drive (i.e. Everyone in L.A.) to find it. Where for art thou Steak Kings?

by Mikey

Do you guys remember when Sizzler and Black Angus used to be the kings of steak and potato’s?  If you wanted steak and shrimp with a baked potato those were the places you would go.  Sizzler had that great cheese toast.  I used to think there was crack in that cheese crust and I could never get enough of it.  Sizzler has fallen a long way down.  It was once a proud steak house where the people got together for a killer salad bar, great steaks and even great fried shrimp. Fresh baked potato’s covered in butter and sour cream made it the best all-you-can-eat joint around.  Who doesn’t remember all you can eat night at the Sizzler? Continue reading

A little bit of everything

by Mikey

So tonight, on this gorgeous Sunday, I wanted to rest up the pallet a bit and give you a buffet of items I have on my A-Team TV tray.

First off who’s watching Hells Kitchen?  Do you have a favorite chef?  I kinda feel chef-wise this seems like a weak group.  I love watching people cry though.  I think it stems from some repressed anger from second grade, but my favorite part of these shows isn’t the food; it’s the stress, ridicule, sadness, and the sheer awesomeness of watching somebody completely break down inside.  For those watching, they finally got rid of Seth who I am not sure could hack it at Burger King.  After watching Top Chef I feel like there is a complete lack of culinary talent on this show. I just gotta hope people keep crying.   Continue reading
