Mr. Lee’s Chinese Food

by Mikey

This is a classic EatmeCalifornia drive by. Nobody told me to visit Mr. Lee’s and nobody said they had great food.  It was a ninja ambush of the highest degree. Would Mr. Lee be ready for culinary combat?

I took a picture of the outside of Mr. Lee’s and it was definitely not my best work.  I decided to take another one after lunch because I was pretty hungry.  Mr. Lee’s is fairly small and only has one dining room.  I’d say, at the most, 50 people could be comfortable.  After that, it would get to be more like a clown car.  The inside is pretty beat up, the ceiling is stained, the walls are a bit dirty, and there are a lot of patches and covering.

I experienced an EatmeCalifornia first at Mr. Lee’s.  My waiter never said a word to me.  I’m not exaggerating; I’m not just saying he mumbled, I’m saying he never spoke one word to me.  They sat me down, brought me water and tea, gave me a menu and then did a ninja vanish.  5 minutes later he re-appeared with notebook in hand, stood by me and waited.  I had said hello at my arrival but now the ninja battle of silence had begun, so I decided not to talk as well. Cafe Fiore Has It All

by Brian

I usually leave Ventura reviews for Mikey, since he’s local and all.  But last Friday night I got an opportunity I just couldn’t pass up.  My friend Tiffany happens to be friends with the executive chef at Cafe Fiore and since I was craving a little decadence, I decided to give Fiore the EatMeCalifornia treatment.

Cafe Fiore – On California St. near Main, in Downtown Ventura

What ended up happening was that EatMeCalifornia got the Fiore treatment.  We arrived right on time for our 8 o’clock reservation and were whisked away to a nice little booth in the back of the restaurant.  The place was packed with 20-30 somethings drinking cocktails and having a great time.  I instantly loved the vibe of this place and it didn’t hurt that it was gorgeous too.  The look is rustic, with high ceilings, dark wood and wine racks everywhere.  It reminded me a lot of what the guys over at Cafe Firenze were trying to accomplish, but this smaller, more intimate space carries it off even better than Fabio and his crew have managed. Busy Bee Café with Gravy and even more Gravy

by Mikey

I thought it might be fun to hit up the Busy Bee Café in Ventura, down in the older part of town, off of Main St.  They have been a staple of the community and a tourist hot spot for a very long time.  Busy Bee is modeled after a 1950’s diner and tries and keep their food similar to that era.  They are all about hamburgers, shakes, pie, and blue plate specials.

This part of Ventura is actually loaded with places to eat, so B and I will be picking them off, one by one.  I chose this one because I had been there a few times many years ago and I remember enjoying the burgers, shakes, and the waitresses in little cheerleader outfits awesome jukebox. Pulled Pork = Tri Tip?

by Mikey

A new bbq joint opened up not too far from me, so you know I had to check it out.  Plus, the place has my name stamped on it, so I had to find out if it was worthy to be a part of the Mike empire.  I’m on the fence with this one folks.  This place kinda left me confused, bewildered, and just a touch bamboozled.

Spencer Makenzie’s Great Fish Taco

by Mikey

I have had a lot of fish tacos in my time.  The taco I had at Spencer Makenzie’s made all those other tacos seem like nasty ass tuna tacos from a frozen multipack at your local grocery store.  This taco made me feel like I was in Hawaii drinking one of those umbrella drinks, lying in a hammock, while the Hawaiian Tropic girls fanned me with 100 dollar bills. It was that good.

This place is not much to look at from the outside.  It definitely does not look like it houses great food.  Inside it’s more like a little diner or an indoor taco stand.  They have a great bunch of people working there.  People who actually know the products and can give you some great inside info on their food. Danny’s Deli and Grill

by Mikey

Ventura is in need of some seriously good deli’s. Thousand Oaks is loaded with them but Ventura thus far has been lackluster. T and I were hoping this family owned Deli would be the beginning of some good stuff. The question remained would the huge jar of scary pickles be to much for us to handle? Continue reading

When your local café has given up on life

by Mikey

I wrote not too long ago about how to tell if a sushi restaurant is in trouble.  This article is a bit different because it is more about eating at joint that has just completely given up on life.  I usually eat at a place and it doesn’t get posted for a day or two.  I had to get this place up as soon as possible to save your stomachs, your taste buds, and your soul.

From the outside this place looks like your typical country kitchen kind of place.  In fact, I think a few years ago that’s what it was.  Now it’s a café that’s open from early morning to mid afternoon.  I was out and about on a few errands and thought I’d try it out for breakfast.  Damn me and my curiosity.
