Sumo Japanese Restaurant

by Mikey

I finally hit up this Japanese place that I’d heard some good things about.   Sumo is tucked away in the corner of the Ralph’s shopping center off of Victoria.  I brought along my resident sushi expert for kids, my boy T.  It was a good thing I brought him too, because he had to help me find the door.  There is no signage and no arrows or lights to guide you.  You just pick the closest blank door to the corner and there it is.  Both T and I had I hopes that this Sumo would be tons better than the Sumo in Camarillo.

Sumo is more than just a sushi place.  They have a pretty large menu and a lot of specials.  I would say sushi is just a small piece to their business, but it is what T and I were interested in.  I’ve never found much interest in the chicken and steak dishes unless they are cooking in front of you.  I very rarely will order anything but sushi from a Japanese joint.

Sumo is a very nice restaurant.  It provides sushi bar seats, full tables, and booths. It’s very clean and modern and the service is pretty good.  One of the things I notice a lot of sushi places doing is bringing you a cup of ice and then a can of coke when you order a soda.  I kinda, at least, like having the illusion I’m not at a block party.  This place has the full on fountain drinks and gives you a hefty “man glass,” which beats the can and cup any day of the week. If it’s called Fins the seafood should be good, right?

by Brian

My Mom and I went out on Sunday for Father’s day.  Since my Dad passed a few years back, we’ve kinda made it into a little family tradition.  Usually we go someplace nice because that’s what Mom deserves.  This year, I gave her three options to choose from and since she was in the mood for seafood, she picked Fins in Westlake.

Fins – Westlake Blvd. and Townsgate in Westlake Village

I was pretty excited to eat here because I had heard good things.  The decor is upscale and the service is professional, if not overly so.  We got there on time for our reservation and were sat immediately.  Things seemed to be starting off quite nicely.

It has been a long time since I’ve had a waitress put my napkin in my lap for me.  I find the practice annoying and was put off when the waitress grabbed my napkin and unceremoniously dropped it in my lap.  I was even more annoyed when she did the same thing to my mom.  I mean, this is Westlake Village, not Beverly Hills.  Here’s my new rule:  If jackets aren’t required to dine, don’t touch my damn napkin. Best Appetizer of 2009 and maybe of all time…

by Brian

I will be very happy when Time Warner decides to give Mikey his cable and internet back.  I’ve been relegated to stealing internet from neighbors just to get posts up and I must say that it sucks the big one.  So anyway, I apologize for missing last night’s post and hope that this one will make it up to you.

Also, I don’t have pics of this place because I only had my cameraphone and this restaurant was darker than Wesley Snipes, so sorry.

Sunset Terrace Restaurant and Lounge– In the Janss Mall on Moorpark Rd., Thousand Oaks

So I went out last night to see Angels & Demons with a friend.  Before we saw the film, which I was disappointed in quite frankly, we decided to stop in at Sunset Terrace to have a couple drinks and some dinner.

Sunset is a little dark even in the day.  The furnishings are nice, but the lack of light makes the bar seem out of place considering it’s in a mall in Thousand Oaks.  Still, they are always busy and right next to the theater so it’s a great place to get drinks before a show.  I personally need at least 3 beers before seeing anything with Tom Hanks. Deadliest Catch – No Second Chances

by Mikey

We left off last week with a 40 ft wave crashing into the Wizard while they were trying to put the tarp over the front pots.  The wave consumed the front of the ship and the deck hands all disappeared into white water.  We were left wondering if anyone was hurt, or even worse, swept off the ship.

Cue Bon Jovi and do your best Captain Sig “I’m on the crab” celebration…….. Continue reading

Deadliest Catch – Down to the Wire

by Mikey

We are in the final week of the king crab season and the boats are all scrambling to make their quotas before the market prices drop too low.  The Time Bandit finished up last week, meeting their quota.  The rest of the fleet has one last week to get on the crab.

Healthy Fish Tacos and Not So Healthy Desserts

by Brian

I can’t let Mikey be the fish taco guy for the site.  I just can’t.  Not when I’ve only just begun to have an appreciation for them.  So in response to Mikey’s fish taco ecstacy at Spencer Makenzie’s, I decided to take on a healthier fish taco in a quaint little mexican place in Westlake Village.

The Sea Casa

The Sea Casa – Corner of Westlake and Agoura Rd. Westlake Village

I had seen this place quite a few times, but resisted going in because there are so many great mexican food options around.  It wasn’t until a friend told me they had the best shrimp tacos that I really took an interest. Continue reading

Deadliest Catch – Deadline

by Mikey

So with the absence of Hells Kitchen and Brian’s new devotion to teaching the homeless how to make origami swans, I have now taken over the Deadliest Catch report.  Sorry (mommom1) your attempts to have me banned from writing have only worked in Tularosa, New Mexico and don’t get a big head, they just went along with you because I once said Tularosa smells like mayonnaise.  On to Deadliest Catch!

This episode labeled “Deadline” marks the last few days of king crab season. Up next is the Opilio season, which is an awesome time to watch this show.  If you missed the first part of the season it’s a great time to jump on.
