Return of the Natural Cafe

by Brian

Hey everybody, it was a long weekend for me so I’m gonna keep this post short and sweet.  Today, I decided to hit up the Natural Cafe in Thousand Oaks.  It’s got a totally different vibe from the Simi location, which is nice.  Plus, where else can you see a skinny, hippy lookin’ white kid go from eating vegan food to rollin’ a Range Rover on dubs in 2.5 seconds.  Gotta love T.O. Getting some tongue on foothill blvd.

by Brian

Last night I set off looking for fortune.  I went to the ATM, took out a couple Hamiltons (Benjamins are so 2008), and headed for Lake View Terrace and my friend Alex’s weekly poker game.

I arrived expecting to throw some bucks down on pizza or whatever delivery we could score, but Alex had another idea altogether.  We got to talking about EatMeCalifornia and Alex let me know that nearby Sylmar had more taco trucks per capita than UCLA has asian people.

Well it doesn’t take much to get my interest, so we all piled into Alex’s car and headed down foothill looking for our fix.  We eventually found it in Tacos El Gordo. Continue reading

Meat Locker for the masses.

by Brian

Today I had the opportunity to finally visit one of Thousand Oaks most revered BBQ restaurants:  The Thousand Oaks Meat Locker.  Unbeknown to me, this little shack is within walking distance of my Mom’s place.  I had no idea.  It took me two attempts to find this place today, and I had a google map.  It’s a little restaurant and you can only read the sign from right in front, which makes it hard for people who drive (i.e. Everyone in L.A.) to find it. The town that time forgot.

by Brian

I don’t know about you, but I really like finding places off the beaten path.  Places where the buildings haven’t been updated since the 40s or 50s, but you can’t tell because everything surrounding them never changed either.  For those of you who don’t know, Santa Paula, California, is one of those places.

I stumbled upon this small town a couple months back, while attempting to find an inspiring spot to take some pictures.  When I saw Santa Paula Coffee Company, I was in desperate need of a caffeine boost.  However, what I experienced there that Saturday afternoon has changed the way I look at coffee shops as a whole.  I know that we primarily do restaurant reviews on EatMeCalifornia, but this little place made such an impression on me that I simply couldn’t leave it out.  Continue reading

Brian is a man of the people.

by Brian

Note: The eating for this post was actually done the day before the Orochon Ramen challenge.  But since my pain and misery is more entertaining in general, this got pushed back by a day.

Taco trucks are an L.A. tradition.  Kinda like hot dog carts in New York.  I’m not talking about your average “roach coach” greasy, almost inedible food.  I’m describing a traditional mexican restaurant on wheels.  Most of your good taco trucks don’t even move very often.  This particular one, that I will be reviewing in a moment, has two locations that it splits the day between.

My buddy Adam is the one who tipped me off about Mariscos del Mar.  He was doing research for a school project on taco trucks and came across this one.  If you know spanish, then you can probably figure out that this taco truck specializes in seafood tacos.  If you don’t know spanish, then just read the last sentence.  And then look at the pretty pictures. Brian Just Got Owned… by Ramen

by Brian

Hey everyone, this was supposed to have gone up yesterday.  However, due to the fact that I spent more time in the bathroom than in front of the computer, it simply wasn’t meant to be.  Anyway, for those of you tracking my facebook page, you probably already know that I went to Orochon Ramen.  What you don’t know, is how I liked it.  I’ve been curled in the fetal position for a little more than a day now, and I’m ready to tell my story. Top Chef Season 5 Wrap-up

by Brian

Well, that does it for another season of TV’s best food show (Sorry, Ramsey.)  With last night’s reunion over and done with, I thought I would milk Top Chef for one last post before it fades away for the next 9 months or so.

Anyway, for those of you who didn’t watch the reunion show, Fabio Viviani won fan favorite.  Good for him!  In my previous post I predicted that it would either be him or Carla taking home the crown, and as always, I was right.  Honestly, he deserved it for carrying the show.  This season of Top Chef was, in my opinion, one of the weakest talent-wise.  Sure Stefan and Hosea showed some skills, but it was Fabio who supplied the laughs along with the talent.

And now, my top 3 Fabio quotes of the season:

  1. “It’s Top Chef, not Top Scallop!” Continue reading
