About Mikey

The 70's brought us many wonderful things. Star Wars, shag carpet, the Bee Gee's, the Brady Bunch, and most important his royal largeness Mikey. Delivered to us in the middle of the night on a bed of twinkies from the gods of cakes and pies. Mikey has been a Ventura County resident for close to 16 years now. He took an oath to bring down the establishment, fight the power, and deliver man-kind from evil. He of course put that all on hold for awhile in order to bring you the best in food reviews from all around California and especially from Ventura County. So food establishments beware, he is coming to your restaurant with his face of fury, you better serve it hot and there better be some gravy on it!

There is a Pub at the Ronald Reagan Library!

by Mikey

Did you guys know the Ronald Reagan Library has a pub?  Nobody ever tells me these things.  I recently went to Reagan’s memorial library because my boy wanted to take me there.  He knows I’m a history buff and that they have a lot of things I’d like to see.  What I didn’t know is that I could get lit while pretending to be president on Air Force One.

Sushi Ozekii

by Mikey

I’ve been doing well on finding some decent sushi lately.  I was out running some errands and actually just happened upon Ozekii’s.  They call themselves a California style sushi restaurant, which usually means more avocado, asparagus, cucumber, and produce in general.  They have a lot of different dishes and most of them are very colorful and have plenty of fish and produce.  Not to mention, they are probably the nicest group of sushi makers I’ve been to in quite a while. Deadliest Catch – Ends of the Earth

by Mikey

It is absolutely, positively, seriously chilly out on the Bering Sea now.  With temperatures hitting forty below, with wind chill and constant rain and snow hitting the fleet, fishing is at its absolute worst so far.  Any fan of the show, of course, knows that it can go from bad to horrible in just hours. Sex, Lies, and the Subway Tuscan Chicken Sandwich

by Mikey

When it comes to marketing product Subway and Jared put a lot of cash into catchy jingles and big product pictures.  When it comes down to it though, I’ve always felt this need to punch Jared in the kidney and that damn five dollar foot long song makes me want to go to the mall and trip old people.  Subway has always been one of those places that are everywhere and I’m sure most of you have experienced a sandwich there.  I grabbed one of their Tuscan chicken sandwiches because its being pushed to the public, but I think we can all agree that any sandwich Subway has ever promoted has been a disappointment.

Subway – Tuscan Chicken Sandwich

My first issue with Subway is that they must not tell their employees how to construct one.  I’m guessin’ the employees would much rather have you go in there and tell them exactly what you want and how to make it, rather then just say, “give me the Tuscan chicken sandwich.”  This is probably they third time I’ve requested a marketed sandwich that the employee asked me a question on every part of construction.  I keep saying give me the Tuscan Chicken that you advertise in the window and they keep asking me, what kind of bread, what kind of cheese, what kind of veg?  Can you imagine Olive Garden having a new pasta dish and then taking you to the kitchen to tell the chef what you want in it?  If it’s on the menu you should kinda know what’s in it if someone requests the exact sandwich.

Deadliest Catch – A slap in the face or a kick in the pants

by Mikey

This week on the DC, we get one of the most interesting episode titles yet.  If you miss it, I think Sig ends up saying it around 5 times.  I once got in a fight with a midget who offered me the same choices.  I went with slap in the face because I figured while he was getting a step ladder to climb up and slap me, I could sneak up behind him and beat him with my wiffle ball bat.  Turned out this midget had hops and just gave me a knock across the jaw.  You live and learn.  On to the catch! Sumo Japanese Restaurant

by Mikey

I finally hit up this Japanese place that I’d heard some good things about.   Sumo is tucked away in the corner of the Ralph’s shopping center off of Victoria.  I brought along my resident sushi expert for kids, my boy T.  It was a good thing I brought him too, because he had to help me find the door.  There is no signage and no arrows or lights to guide you.  You just pick the closest blank door to the corner and there it is.  Both T and I had I hopes that this Sumo would be tons better than the Sumo in Camarillo.

Sumo is more than just a sushi place.  They have a pretty large menu and a lot of specials.  I would say sushi is just a small piece to their business, but it is what T and I were interested in.  I’ve never found much interest in the chicken and steak dishes unless they are cooking in front of you.  I very rarely will order anything but sushi from a Japanese joint.

Sumo is a very nice restaurant.  It provides sushi bar seats, full tables, and booths. It’s very clean and modern and the service is pretty good.  One of the things I notice a lot of sushi places doing is bringing you a cup of ice and then a can of coke when you order a soda.  I kinda, at least, like having the illusion I’m not at a block party.  This place has the full on fountain drinks and gives you a hefty “man glass,” which beats the can and cup any day of the week. Rookees – Sportsbar and Grill

by Mikey

Rookees is a sports bar and grill down on Main St. in Ventura.  It’s an excellent spot to catch the game, get some food, and most importantly, drink like you did right before your doctor told you your liver is the size of an adult raccoon.  They have plenty of beers on tap and we even managed to try a few of the dishes.

Rookees is like your modern day sports bar.  Just like the Espn Zone there are tons of TVs and they are all huge.  You can watch a game from almost anywhere in the place.  They have booth seating, tables and plenty of room at the bar. They even have a few themed nights.  We happened to be there on Surf night, which meant the help dressed a bit more tropical.  All the TVs were linked into surf video and they had a nightly drawing, giving away surf boards and various other beach gear. Since they were not giving away a whale carcass or a hat made from sea lion, I did not participate.

We ordered the appetizer sampler, chicken enchiladas, and the mini hamburgers.  It’s way too dark in the place to really get a good picture of the food so you’re just gonna have to go see for yourself.  Dark places can be good for bringing ugly dates, so if you’re dating someone you don’t want other people to see you with, I’d take them to Rookees. Get a corner booth. Your friends will never see you there. You can just sit back in the dark and watch them get more attractive with every round. Continue reading
