This is an EatmeCalifornia first. B and I went back to a place we already reviewed to try out their breakfast. Many of the places we’ve been to have been places that do both breakfast and dinner, but because JD’s BBQ was good, and had a very old school, just like your grandparents used to make, kinda thing goin’ on we thought their breakfast would be something good to try. After all, how many other places do grits like they are supposed to be done?
JD’s BBQ – In Oxnard at Patterson and Wooley
JD’s only does breakfast on the weekends. So if you wanna try it out, don’t show up in the middle of the week or you’ll be waitin’ awhile. Check out our review of JD’s to get a feel for the place. I’m just going to go over our breakfast.
They have a very simple breakfast menu. There are waffles, a large country breakfast, the breakfast burrito and a few others. Brian went with the chicken and waffles, which for anyone who lives around Ventura, it gives us a chance to get chicken and waffles without having to drive so far south. I went with the big country breakfast because where I come from you go big or you go slightly smaller and then people make fun of you. “Look at the big guy with the cute little breakfast. He’s pretending he’s not huge”.
You get eggs with the chicken and waffles which makes for a good sized breakfast. B enjoyed the waffles, the chicken was ok. It seemed just a bit tough but the coating was really good. The eggs on both the big country and the chicken and waffles were a bit under done but that’s an easy fix and some people like them that way.
The big country comes with your choice of meat, eggs, a biscuit, and either country potatoes or grits. I mistakenly ordered the potatoes and forgot about the grits, but the guys were kind enough to bring me some anyway. I had the same issue with the scrambled eggs as Brian did, just a bit underdone. I got sausage patties, which were excellent and the country potatoes are some of the best I’ve had. They don’t require condiments and they are seasoned really well. The biscuits are fantastic and B and I tried to convince them that a biscuits and gravy would be a great addition to the menu. The part I really enjoyed was having grits. They were really good and well prepared. Very few places have grits and those that do, don’t know how to prepare them.
Definitely swing by and give their breakfast a try. The food is good at JD’s. They are really friendly and they really do care if you enjoy the food or not. These are the types of places we want to stick around and have a long life and the only way that’s gonna happen is if we all show up. Skip Carrows and IHOP and head down to JD’s.
Especially if you’re a dude. If I ever hear another dude order a Rutty Tutty Fresh and Fruity instead of a Big Country Breakfast I’m going to punch them in the neck and take their man card.
